About Kate
Before establishing her full time creative practice, Kate built a successful career in the finance sector, managing projects and corporate change. She earned formal project management and change management qualifications and led complex organisational initiatives.
Kate’s leadership extends beyond Aotearoa. In 2022, she served as an official New Zealand representative for the United Nations International Year of Glass (IYOG). Acting as a conduit between New Zealand and the UN, Kate coordinated national participation, reported on events across the motu, and chaired monthly meetings for participating artists. She also received UN funding for an exhibition celebrating glass during the International Year of Glass, further strengthening New Zealand’s presence within the global glass community.
Alongside her studio work, Kate has contributed significantly to the glass arts sector in Aotearoa. As Editor and committee member of the New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass (NZSAG), she was part of the organising team for the 2019 NZSAG–Ausglass Joint Conference in Whanganui. This major Trans-Tasman event received substantial Creative New Zealand funding, reflecting its national importance and ambition. As part of the pre-conference preparation, Kate travelled to Murano, Italy — one of the world’s most significant centres for glassmaking — to build international partnerships and strengthen global connections for the event.
During her time with NZSAG, Kate also used her technical expertise to rebuild the organisation’s website after it was shut down due to a hacking incident. She restored functionality, rebuilt the platform, and personally hosted the website for four years, ensuring continuity for members and maintaining a vital communication channel for the sector.
Kate is the driving force behind the nationally successful Glass Art in NZ (GAINZ). Focused on providing community, fostering conversations, and increasing public awareness of glass within the New Zealand arts landscape, GAINZ has become a vital platform for connection and visibility. Through GAINZ, Kate has helped connect hundreds of artists, increased national visibility for glass, and created new opportunities for both emerging and established makers.
As part of organising national exhibitions, Kate secured Creative Communities funding from Auckland Council Creative Communities NZ for Focus on Glass 2022, which became the largest glass exhibition in the country, showcasing over 200 individual works by New Zealand glass artists and attracting significant public engagement. She also received Creative Communities funding from the Matamata Piako District Council to present a travelling exhibition, 5 Women in Glass, expanding opportunities for artists to share their work with new audiences. Kate’s leadership during the Covid 19 period — when exhibition opportunities were scarce — demonstrated both initiative and deep commitment to supporting the glass community. She continues to run GAINZ and remains passionate about strengthening and advocating for the NZ glass sector.
Kate is also the Creative Director of Red Hot Glass, supplying wholesale glass art to gift galleries across Aotearoa and providing trade products to the wider New Zealand art community. This role reflects her strong commercial understanding of the arts sector, her ability to manage production and distribution, and her commitment to supporting the creative ecosystem.
